Scientific hour held: Effect of Multiple Earthquakes on the Response of Reinforced Concrete Structures

A scientific hour on the topic Why Engineers Are (the Most) Important was held in the faculty amphitheater on Friday, 24 April 2026. Professor Josip Atalić, Ph.D., president and one of the founders of the Croatian Center for Earthquake Engineering, presented the work of this institution, which was established following the devastating earthquakes that struck Croatia in 2020 with the aim of providing expert assistance in assessing damage and reconstructing buildings. Particular attention was given to presenting the field work of engineers who went out to the affected areas immediately after the earthquakes to assess the safety of buildings. In the field, they conducted rapid and detailed assessments, classified buildings according to their usability status, and provided recommendations for urgent repair measures. Such an undertaking required a high level of professional expertise and organizational skills, given the large number of buildings involved and the need for a rapid response. In addition to participating in field assessments, staff of the Croatian Center for Earthquake Engineering are also involved in developing guidelines for safe reconstruction, providing training, conducting research, and developing technical solutions to improve the resilience of buildings.
